Cultural stress and how it affects the skin

Stress-related hormones, such as adrenaline & cortisol, damage cell walls allowing precious water to escape. This stress-induced water loss causes our cells & connective tissue to break down, which prevents our organs from functioning at optimal levels. This becomes visible in the skin and contributes to common skin problems such as acne, rosacea & even premature signs of ageing.

How to prevent razor burn

Use a sharp razor & press it gently across your skin. Use a shaving cream/oil made for sensitive skin. Wet the skin & let the cream soak in for 3 mins. Shave in the same direction as your hair grows. When shaving your legs, move from thighs to feet rather than in upward strokes. Rinse the blade between strokes for even cutting. Use a hypo-allergenic, soothing lotion to nourish & protect afterwards.

What causes cracked heels?

Dry skin & conditions that dry the skin – diabetes; hypothyroidism; atopic dermatitis; Juvenile plantar dermatosis; psoriasis. Corns & callouses are the first step towards cracked heels. Increased pressure (from excessive weight/obesity; prolonged standing; wearing open-backed shoes/sandals) on the fat pad under the heel causes it to expand sideways, leading to splitting or cracking of the callous.
